Collection: Near-Infrared Light Therapy

Red light therapy is often described as a single thing, but it uses two distinct wavelengths that do different jobs. Visible red light at 660nm works in the skin. Near-infrared light at 850nm is invisible to the eye and penetrates considerably deeper, reaching muscle, joint, tendon and connective tissue. It is the near-infrared component that athletes, physiotherapists and recovery-focused customers care about most. The Welzo Near-Infrared Light Therapy collection gathers every LUMENPRO device that delivers 850nm near-infrared light across the whole body.

How near-infrared light works

Near-infrared photons pass through the skin and are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, in the deeper tissue they reach. This absorption is studied for three effects. The first is ATP production: mitochondria exposed to near-infrared light are studied for increased energy output. The second is circulation: near-infrared light is associated with the release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves local blood flow. The third is inflammatory signaling: photobiomodulation research reports modulation of the inflammatory processes that follow exercise and injury. Together these are the proposed mechanisms behind the recovery and soreness outcomes reported in sports-science trials. For the supplement side of mitochondrial support, see ATP & Mitochondrial Support.

Why density matters for near-infrared

Because near-infrared light has to travel further to reach its target tissue, the amount delivered at the surface matters more than it does for red light. Devices with higher LED counts and higher irradiance deliver a meaningful near-infrared dose to deep tissue in less time. That is why the Elite configurations of the LUMENPRO range, with up to 8,610 LED chips, are the preferred choice for customers whose priority is muscle and joint recovery rather than skin alone.

Near-infrared devices in this collection

  • LUMENPRO Full-Body Red Light Therapy Blanket: 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared across the whole body, in Single Sided and Pro Double Sided configurations.
  • LUMENPRO Elite+ High-Density LED System: thousands of additional diodes for more near-infrared light per session, up to a full double-mat configuration.
  • LUMENPRO Version 3.0: the newest generation, with higher irradiance and LED chip counts from 4,320 to 8,610, delivering the most near-infrared output in the range.

Who near-infrared light therapy is for

Athletes and active adults use 850nm sessions after training for muscle soreness and recovery of function; see Sports Performance & Muscle Recovery. Customers with joint and tendon concerns value the depth of penetration that red light alone cannot provide; see Bone & Joint Health. Anyone interested in circulation benefits from the nitric oxide mechanism, which also places near-infrared therapy alongside the routines in Heart & Circulation. Because near-infrared is invisible, sessions are comfortable with eyes open or closed, and because the LEDs run cool, they suit evening use.

Red and near-infrared together

Every LUMENPRO device emits both wavelengths simultaneously, so a single session treats skin and deep tissue at once. There is no need to choose between them. For comparison of blanket models, see Red Light Therapy Blankets.

Why LUMENPRO by Welzo

Welzo is a UK-founded health company trusted by more than 200,000 customers and backed by over 27,000 five-star reviews across the Welzo platform. LUMENPRO devices use clinically relevant 660nm and 850nm wavelengths, high-density LED arrays and flexible, cool-running construction designed for daily full-body use at home. Each one folds for storage and plugs into a standard outlet.

Frequently asked questions

Is near-infrared light the same as infrared heat?

No. Infrared saunas use far-infrared heat. Near-infrared light therapy at 850nm uses LEDs that run cool and work through photobiomodulation, not warmth.

Can I see near-infrared light?

No. 850nm is beyond the visible spectrum. The red glow you see from a LUMENPRO device is the 660nm red light; the near-infrared LEDs are working alongside it invisibly.

How deep does 850nm light penetrate?

Research places meaningful penetration at several centimeters, enough to reach muscle, joint capsules and tendons, which is why near-infrared is the recovery wavelength.
